DNN Corp's duty of care for 3rd party module continuity

DNN Corp's duty of care for 3rd party module/vendor continuity

Many 3rd party vendors have their own licensing validation system independent of DNN Corps' Store.

We recently purchased a number of 3rd party modules from DNN Store and were NEVER advised that these vendors would implement their own licensing control measures independent of DNN Store.

We purchased a theme and after 2 months it's stopped rendering pages and all content pages were blank. The problem was the 3rd Party vendor did not advise such an issue even existed in the installation guide or on the DNN Store advertisement, the DNN Store also did not make us aware of the posible issue with 3rd vendors going out of business or ceasing to maintain their licencing and compliance checks.

As an end user, we have paid for modules and expect them to continue to operate. I don't have a problem with licensing validation if it is maintained by DNN Corp's Store (a chargeable service which should provide both vendors and end users with a level of comfort)

How is DNN Corp going to protect end user implementations if these 3rd party modules cease to provide license validation?

We have a significant investment in DNN content development, only to find out a random 3rd party vendor can shut down our site in seconds without any recourse by us. This is a huge problem for commercial installations of DNN and the longevity of DNN as viable platform.

We are now seriously considering our options as to whether or not DNN is a suitable platform for commercial use.

      Peter,

have you tried contacting the vendor? This is definitely a problem you should discuss with them.

On the other hand, I agree that this should be documented. But this here is the Community site, and no one of us gets paid or gets money from the store sales (except he offers his products there). The store belongs to DNN Corp., and you should contact them. BTW: are you using the platform, or are you using Evoq?

But in any CMS's ecosystem there are companies that come and go, and there is always a risk that you use extensions that stop being developed.

      Happy DNNing!

        Hi Peter,

Basically as Michael said, in any open source CMS there are a certain degree of uncertainty. For commercial modules, this means that you need to do research to find out of they are here to stay, if quality is good etc. But also for open source modules, you want to make sure they are well maintained as a module that has not been taken care of for years is almost certainly vulnerable for current attacks. This is not just DNN: if you take a look at Wordpress or Drupal, you'll find tons of modules you want to stay away from.

Your question regarding a suitable fit for commercial use: I get it that you might want to have a solution that is managed. This is absolutely the case. This might mean you'll want to engage with an agency that takes care of that. They are capable of giving the proper advice of modules and themes whether it can be done with open source or commercial, what suppliers are trustworthy etc

Another option would be to buy a full blown product like Kentico. That is a guaranteed product but...there are pitfalls too.
        1. The quality of the solution is totally dependant on the quality of the Kentico partner.
        2. Kentico give less freedom to administrators and end users which means you need a much bigger budget as you need your Kentico much more often. Even simple things what we take for granted.
        3. Upgrades are very time consuming and expensive.
        4. The license starts at around 15.000 USD but this goes up very rapidly to 40K per year (after initial fee of 70K). And if you want more than 10 sites, the fee is around 350.000 USD.

As you already have a large invenstment in content management, I would suggest to either have someone create a custom theme for you (agree to obtain the source) or to use one of the free themes like Mdesign, DNNContra etc. This will get you back up and running very fast.
