Deploying changes without Site Downtime

New Around Here

    Hi,

Whenever we need to deploy any changes that require a new dll or an updated dll to be placed in the production environment, our site takes 20 minutes to start as all the dlls are being rebuilt etc. This creates a 20 minutes downtime for us and has become a problem to keep the server down for so long. I am sure there must be a better way to deploy that I am overlooking. Can someone guide me on how one needs to do this so that the site downtime, if any, is minimal?

    Thanks

this sounds like an issue with your server, 20 minutes are for sure too long for a site startup and bare the risk of a timeout. Check the server resources assigned to your site and review the number of extensions installed on your site. I'd also check server logs for any timeouts happening during the start process.

If things are taking 20 minutes, then you need to change your approach to the site.

I'm guessing that you have a large number of custom modules that need to be compiled. The way to solve this is to switch your module development approach to creating modules that are compiled and installed with their dll files ready to go.

Whenever you make changes, there will be a small amount of downtime as the site loads for the first time. Usually this should be a few minutes or less.
