    Hi,

My running club has a website that is on DNN, offered to us through Athletics NZ. But unfortunately, the platform will no longer be supported soon. So we need to move our website elsewhere.  I am trying to work out how to export the contents of our site but can't figure it out.  I have looked at this DNN page, but what I have looks nothing like that example in my own admin section. I cannot find anywhere in the settings that says Import /Export. Am I on an older version of DNN and need different instructions? - I can't find what version I am using either anywhere in the settings. I would appreciate any advice people are able to give.

    Gratefully, Stephen

Also, when I click on "Online Help" all I get is a sad face icon and "www.dnnsoftware.com refused to connect."

        Hi Stephen,

First of all, forget about "Online Help": it's useless since a long ago...

(If I've understood you well, your website is hosted in a larger and shared DNN installation. Otherwise, if you just have a full DNN for you only, the following will not apply and you should better consider moving your website to another hosting).

What you're seeing in DNN documentation refers to version 9, and it's likely that your web in on a prior version. Asuming that you may have DNN 7 or 8 on your site, you'll find export tools (login as superuser) at Host>Site Management. If you export a site template, making sure of including all content, users, etc. you should be able to import it into another DNN. This will work depending on the kind of module you've used in your web site, as not all modules support the DNN export-import feature.
Being said that, maybe you don't have host permissions (superuser), so you'll have to ask your host to do the export for you. And, by the way, ask about the DNN version you're on (only host users can see that).

        I hope this helps you,
        Francisco

Excellent. Thank you Francisco. That is helpful. I will try to track down the superuser.

            Stephen,

It would be really helpful to know which version of DNN you are using. Whoever runs the site and/or has SuperUser access should be able to tell you that. Looking at the control panel when you are logged in as an administrator can narrow things down a bit.

Your web pages have DNN's copyright notice included and it says "Copyright (c) 2002-2014, by DNN Corporation " so that's a place to start.

There is a function available to SuperUsers that will export your entire site to a couple of files that, in theory and sometimes in practice, can be used to recreate the site in another instance of DNN.

Depending on your DNN version, this may or may not work. Also, things tend to work better if you are importing your site into the same version of DNN from which it was exported.

You will also need to get copies of any third party modules being used and any skins/themes that you use. Again, your SuperUser should be able to do that. I can see that you use EasyDNN News and a module from DNN Go. Both of these have up to date versions.

As a start, now is the time to try to get an initial export of your site, and any other things that you need. The quicker you can set up a test site and try to reconstruct it from an export, the more likely you are to be successful when you need to do it for real. And, when is "soon"?

TBH I would try to ask them to send you a working copy of the DNN installation. (Database + Files)
When their DNN install contains multiple sites, they can create a copy of the installation, remove all other sites and send you the backup.
That will save you a lot of work /  problems.
