Since the notifications were already working for admins, I'm thinking that e-mail address setting was not the fix - but rather, the subscription permission.
They were not working for me nor for Tycho nor David AFAIK

True. They were working for me since day one though, and I believe I had manually added the roles to my user account (all mentioned accounts are superusers).
Right, that might be it..
