Most Stable Version of DNN 9 & Help Me Justify Upgrading

    Good morning everyone,

    Love the new site!

    My department is trying to build a justification for (finally!) upgrading from 8.x to 9.x.  This is a government agency, so we would need to upgrade to the most stable version, not necessarily the most recent.  

    And we're using Evoq Content rather than Platform.  (Sorry to invade the Platform forums, but there just aren't any other forums for the paid version)

    What do you think the most stable version is right now?

    I am looking up the documentation for 9 online, but I thought it would be useful to see what your personal experiences have been.  For those who migrated from 8.x to 9.x back in the day, what are the main improvements you've seen?  Particularly something that might sound awesome to upper management? :)

      I think that most stable version of DNN Platform is 9.3.2.

      I don't think that Evoq has been upgraded to 9.3.2 Platform yet.

        Thanks, Joe, that is very helpful.  I will keep an ear out for that release.

        In the meantime, I'm looking into either 9.1.1, 9.2.2 or 9.3.1 (Evoq 9.3.0) to see what might cause the least amount of upgrade pain and the most stability.

          I'd start with the latest version of Evoq that is prior to 9.2, as most of the pain associated with deprecated API call comes then.

          Then, upgrade all of your modules to their latest versions, and hopefully those are also rated for 9.3.

          Then upgrade to the latest Evoq, if that's different.

          Then you'll be prepared for 9.3.2.

          You will probably want to do all of this upgrading stuff away from your production site, then move the upgraded to site to production.

          Don't forget to make backups at every step so that you can revert and try again when that is necessary.

              One thing to always consider with an upgrade is that we have security fixes in almost every single release of the platform. From 8.x to 9.x, we have published upwards of 25 security bulletins addressing various items, most minor. I typically find that the best way to justify is to sell the security aspect of the upgraded releases.

              As Joe mentioned though the 9.2.x upgrade can be complicated if you are using older third-party modules, or custom code that was using methods that were removed in the 9.2.0 release.

                  Yes, security is one of the biggest selling points.    I added your number estimate of security bulletins to our justification document.

                  All our documentation has been turned in.  Hoping for approval when everyone returns from holiday/vacation next week.

                    Thanks Will, that is really helpful, especially about the timing of when to update/delete extensions versus when to upgrade the DNN version.

                    I'm going to share that with our team.

                    Hopefully this time next week we'll know whether our upgrade request has been approved.
