I have a customer who wishes to have a simple dropdown with a list of 5 different items that would output a colored button (HTML), that once set, would display on other pages where that module was added to. What is the best way to achieve this. It seems like it should be relatively simple so I would hate to dump a bunch of money into a fancy module that would do way more than I need it to.

Presumably, each of the buttons performs a different function?

I would probably do this using 2sxc (free, open source, and incredibly powerful and flexible). Primarily, you have control over the code, and you can put code into the module. You can create a UI in which a non-technical user can create and edit the components of the buttons without screwing things up.

Once you have this working on one page, it's a simple matter to add the module to other pages.

I did exaclty the same using Open Content

You can easily place custom CSS with it but I also created a template where the user can create custom buttons which can be selected when placing the module.
