We have a charity DNN site with chatrooms is it possible for the chatrooms to function more like a stand alone app like messenger does for Facebook? Really sorry I am seriously not tech savvy (husband does the site) but we seem to be unable to find anything that is safe for adults and minors to use and many want to move away from FB

No app like that exists AFAIK, although it could be built. But with a responsice Theme you could make it look / function like an app.
Actually, IMO apps are part of the privacy issues, they collect a lot of data while in a browser a user has much more control (read add blockers etc.) (I personally avoid apps whenever possible for that reason) So if your concern is privacy a "web app" could be a better choice.

As Timo said: there is no app for this. But there is quite some social functionality on board by default. Like making friends and sending them messages. Currently, if someone has sent you a message, you need to login to the site and go to your message center to read the message. So, the feature that is missing, is push notifications (firebase) on your phone when a message is sent. And this is quite an important one as activation is key.
Last advice on the message center: do test a lot to learn how the flow works and looks. Because it looks a bit dodgy sometimes, so worth to tweak some styling.
