Oh.. you are insulting John and all the work he spent on them. :-) They are coming from a template, so on your own site you can.
OK, but I want to turn that off here. I strongly dislike badges and the whole gamification of my answers and work.

Hi Mariette. Badges were a long-requested feature to encourage community engagement.
If you don't want them on a site you are building/managing, they can easily be deleted from the forums control panel. On this site, do you think we should have an "opt out" feature so you can say 1) I don't want any badges, and/or 2) don't show me anyone else's badges?
Yes, I do not want to see them nor do I want those emails informing I got a badge.

1. Please put in an issue in the forums Github repo (https://github.com/DNNCom...munityForums/issues) to request new settings to 1) disable display of badges and/or 2) disable your own earning of badges.
2. there is already an option under "my settings" to disable the notifications when you receive a badge.

Can we get custom badges? I would really like to be the proud and only bearer of the "We Don't Need No Stinkin' Badges" badge. :)
