Both OpenContent and 2sxc are excellent platforms, and our solution, RocketContent, offers the same capabilities plus, we like to think, a bit more.

From the start, our goal was to build a true directory based system using a real file structure with indexes, categories, properties, and full DNN search integration. This forms the foundation for events, news, and other content types within a genuinely workable and extensible module suite. We frequently extend this core system with additional plugins tailored to our clients needs.

The first version of RocketContent was created in 2006, rewritten in 2015, and most recently re engineered and merged with concepts from OpenStore, which we also developed https://www.openstore-ecommerce.com/en-gb/, to further enhance the directory system. Over the years, it has evolved into a solid, reliable, and practical tool.

Our primary motivation has always been to preserve our three level template editing workflow. This allows us to maintain system level templates in GitHub that can be downloaded and reused, while still enabling quick, bespoke edits directly within a project, without the need to create new template versions for minor adjustments.

By integrating DeepL and ChatGPT directly into the UI, we have also given our clients a more powerful and professional content creation experience.

Give it a try, and feel free to contact me on GitHub with any feedback. We are always happy to listen and improve.

Yup, ran through the same problem.
I guess it's all "paid for" extensions or nothing. The core has visibly shrunk from the haydays of DNN 3. We used to have core event modules, store module, form and list modules, gallery modules, perhaps not the best but still working. Now we have didly squat...
Whatever. I guess this is the new normal for DNN.

As others stated, some of the modules you mention can still be used and are still maintained (mainly thanks to Daniel).
The days when there was a commercial entity managing the project are long gone; the community manages the project now.
The nature of Open Source is that whether a module is maintained depends on a developer spending time on it because he uses the module himself, likes the project or has a sponsor. Read more on the subject.

We at 40FINGERS replaced all of the previous core modules (and even Ventrian News and Ventrian Gallery) with Open Content.
Structured content is much more flexible than these older "hard coded" core modules.
(unless they are made for a very specific task like the Forums module)
If needed, you can just add a setting or another template for a different view.
There's a learning curve, but once you understand the possibilities, it’s hard to go back.
