As others stated, some of the modules you mention can still be used and are still maintained (mainly thanks to Daniel). The days when there was a commercial entity managing the project are long gone; the community manages the project now. The nature of Open Source is that whether a module is maintained depends on a developer spending time on it because he uses the module himself, likes the project or has a sponsor. Read more on the subject. We at 40FINGERS replaced all of the previous core modules (and even Ventrian News and Ventrian Gallery) with Open Content. Structured content is much more flexible than these older "hard coded" core modules. (unless they are made for a very specific task like the Forums module) If needed, you can just add a setting or another template for a different view. There's a learning curve, but once you understand the possibilities, it’s hard to go back.
