Congrats on posting!

Hi - I'm looking for a module/extension that allows me to set up user subscriptions, when a user can sign up and receive an automatic email when content is updated on the website. Do you know what would be a good tool for this?

Thanks

Tom

I'm not aware of any such module.

Years ago there were some "page updates" modules that placed "last updated on ..." messages on pages. For the most part, I believe that they relied on "last updated" time stamps in modules.

Building such a module wouldn't be difficult, provided that you are using modules that accurately reflect when changes have been made. In practice, it could be a real pain.

There's no problem at all putting a "Subscribe to website updates" buttons on your site, and saving the email address of people who want them. For a minimal programming approach I'd probably use DNNSharp's Action Form, but you could do this with 2sxc, Open Content / Open Form, or even Form & List.

The other side of the coin is that it's been years since I've seen a question about such a module, and I don't recall seeing buttons on websites.

For my money, a "Subscribe to Our Newsletter" button is a better idea. Then you have to commit to actually creating and sending one. For sending, I'd personally use something like MailChimp to avoid the many problems with managing an email list.

Tom,

I wrote a module some time ago that uses Lucene to display the latest changes/additions (see here). It should not be too much work to extend this module with a subscription option that lets the user choose to get information on a daily, weekly or monthly basis.

Happy DNNing!

Thanks both of you for the feedback. Are you familiar with this module:

No, but Horacio (Evotiva) is one of the good guys! He makes and supports really good modules.

I note that the module you referenced only issues notifications for file-related changes, not site content changes.

Tom,

yes I did use that for one project, where the participants of a contest had to upload their application. Really great module if you need it for the usecases meant for.

Happy DNNing!

That's about files, weren't you looking for "content updates"?

Hi again Michael -
I'm taking a look at your SiteNews module. Is there any documentation available for it? One question I have: Is it possible to specify which pages / modules are included in the notifications?
Thanks - let me know if I should ask my question somewhere else.

Tom,

there is not too much documentation, but the settings should be self-explaining.

you can't include/exclude modules here, this could be another improvement of the module. But you can exlude modules from the search in the module settings, so they won't get listed in this module as well (as it is based on the search).

Happy DNNing!
