Problem

Nowadays, you can have a lot in the head of a page or website .

  • Google verification (tbv search console)
  • Google Analytics
  • Piwik Pro
  • Matomo
  • Siteimprove
  • Twitter cards
  • OG-tags
  • Dublin Core
  • Rich cards
  • JSON LD schema
  • Webpacks
  • etc etc

How it currently works

For example 1 page where we want to do some GEO improvements. In this case JSON LD and some metatags

The JSON LD looks like

I have to past that in a very tiny box

Below the json, I need to paste more stuff (meta data)

Then it gets crowded

For a regular editor it is hard to look at and screams for errors. And you don't want to maintain this piece of code like this.

Proposal

(if you have an alternative, I'm open for that)

What if we give the page head (and website head as well) a dropdown with 'Name'

If you expand the dropdown you can see the values of the names that are already there.

If you select one, you can edit. Or you can create a new one. (writing this, I realize you also need to be able to delete one :-) )

Tycho, your idea is similar to the way Open Content works, you can easilly edit little pieces of code instead of having a bunch of code top-down in one place. This idea will also work for Site Settings -> Site Behavior -> Page Output Settings. I like it!

It's not an easy issue...

An other solution is to have custom page settings like the custom user profile properties
So we can edit the information in a more user friendly way : image, text, type, ...

And then have somthing like a skinobject with a template like the ddr menu that generate the meta tags and/or scripts in the head of page.
And have to reuse the actual information as page title, description, url

And if you want to solve all use cases , you need to handle the use cases of modules witch generate sub urls of pages like articles modules.
Then this meta tags/script need to be replaced by stuff generated by the module it self.

I sometimes solve partialy the isssue with custom code in the skin that generate the some tags/scripts based on the existing page settings.

I am really looking for a solution that would empower marketeers. But if you say something is not easy, i tend to believe you :-)

Would an interface like this make things easier?

Congrats, your posts are really liked!

We've had our own solution in place for years now (using our own 2sxc App, AccuStruct). It started as just a quick way to solve per-page OpenGraph data so clients could make their posts look nicer on Facebook. But it grew.

How would these new page settings play well with existing solutions?

Additional, as you pointed out, that box is a very small space. On a well setup site, there could easily be 5+ things to edit in there and (IMHO) a LOT of related useful info (docs, validators) that feels very necessary. My gut and experience tells me this idea is easily going to need its own PersonaBar Extension panel.

Tycho, my idee was more something like in site settings, User profiles but for pages.

Here something similar with OpenContent :
