Hello.  I manage two sites in one DNN installation; the server is hosted.  We've been having a lot of issues where one of the sites goes down and shows a 500 Internal Server Error.  In all cases, when I recycle the application pool through my hosting control panel, the site comes back up.

So far, I've seen the 500 error happen in these scenarios:

  • If I "restart application" from the DNN Persona Bar>Server area (always)
  • When I make changes to server settings from the DNN Persona Bar >Server area (always)
  • At 12:00am (every few days)

I've looked at the Admin site log and do not see any consistent error that happens before the site goes down.  Same with the resource logs under Portals/Default/Logs.

I'm looking for guidance on where else to look to identify the issue.  I suspect it has something to do with the connection to the database when it is rebooting, but not exactly sure where to start.  I am a novice -- I get by managing the content and settings of the site, but have very little experience or knowledge regarding the server/database side of things.  Any suggestions are appreciated!

Have someone look at the IIS logs for your DNN instance. There should be some information there.

Congrats on posting!
1. Some more info about the version would be welcome. I know some versions prior to DNN 9 could have issues that sound like this.
2. As it happens around 12.00, I would lead me to check the scheduler. Every scheduled task can also be run on demand, so you can try to create the 500 error on the spot. And then check the Admig log to see if there is any pointer.

I am running v. 09.03.02

Thank you for the suggestion to look at the scheduler and IIS files.  I will do so.

Running through the scheduled tasks, it appears Purge Client Dependency Files scheduled task may be the culprit.  It created the 500 error when I ran it manually.  Thank you for helping me identify that.  Any suggestions on next steps?

AFAIR the "purge client dependency files" job just tries deleting files from the cache folder in file system (\App_Data\ClientDependency\), which may fail, while a 3rd party software is accessing it - a backup, virus scan or Windows search indexing job. Scan the jobs being performed at the same time (windows event viewer might be helpful) and exclude the folder from these processes.
