Suddenly last night at about 9.20 uk time our multi portal DNN instance went down with the following error.

ourdomain.com redirected you too many times. Try clearing your cookies.

ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS

It was working fine all that day and nothing we do to restore is making any difference, we tried going back to a snapshot from that morning, we also decided to roll back the database to a backup from the previous day.
We are baffled, to tell the truth.. has anyone any idea where we can look?, and any advice/hints is welcome.

This isn't the answer to your problem, but you can start by opening up the error console in your browser (CTRL + SHIFT + J on Chrome). Then head to either the Network or Console tab (I believe it's the Network tab), attempt to load your problem URL, and see exactly what's going on with the URLs. From there you may be able to determine a little more information.

Congrats on posting!

This issue normally occurs because of something configuration-related.

  • Double-check the existence and spelling of everything in the database connection strings
  • Double-check the existence and spelling of the correct portal alias everywhere (web.config, PortalAlias table, IIS, SSL bindings, etc.)
  • Make sure you don't have an invalid XML in your web.config.
  • Make sure your web.config doesn't have unsupported sections included (may require enabling IIS tracing)
  • Re-apply permissions and make sure it's using the correct user account with the correct permissions level

Hello, I'm on DNN 9.12, brand new website and I'm facing the exact same issue. Everything was fine when I left my computer last night, this morning I'm getting this error.

I looked at the 5 suggestions from Will but I just don't think any of those would be the issue and I haven't done DB work yet.

Here's a screenshot of my Network tab (tried all browsers): https://jmp.sh/NuLZH2Qj

Looking at the Redirect issue, one thing that could have happened yesterday was that, apparently, I deleted the Home page and so had to recreate it but then another unwanted test page became the default Home because I could not delete it so, went into Site Settings, changed the Home page to my new Home (refreshed) but noticed the change wasn't taking effect so, I simply disabled the unwanted page.

I kept working fine then I left. Perhaps on timeout Log out, now I'm having this issue... it can't resolve the default Home Page?

Thank you,

Alejandro

Check the settings in Pages -> (select your Home page) -> Advanced -> S.E.O.
Also check this for the Test page and the original Home page
Delete any URLs that are no longer relevant ... or just delete all that you can and let it start again.
Clear cache/restart.

OK this may not apppy to all of you, but please always test in a private window when you have a redirect issue.
Browsers nowadays keep redirects in cache even after you removed the root cause, which can become really confusing.

Weird, does not seem to be a caching issue in this case, but related to issue with the "home" page.

BTW, I'm surprised you were able to delete you home page at all..
Can you visit any of the other pages on the site?

I really doubt I deleted the Home Page. Somehow it just disappeared... because DELETE home page is not allowed anyways. I was adding BULK PAGES etc etc so, can't quite remember everything that took place.

I tried other URLs and I get Sorry, the page you are looking for cannot be found and might have been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable. It is recommended that you start again from the homepage. Feel free to contact us if the problem persists or if you cannot find what you’re looking for. but when I try really hard to remember a correct URL it gets redirected to the same Home Page issue...
