Hello,

I am looking to build a business directory with these types of functionality:
1. Business owners can add and modify their information. logo, photos, descriptions, contact info, etc.
2. Admin users have the ability to approve and publish the listing.
3. Has the ability to add custom fields
4. Custom fields may be hidden for admin purposes or published (this is not essential)

The solution does not have to be free, so if you have commercial suggestions, please include them.

I used to work extensively with DNN but I have not done any work with DNN for many years. I am not familiar with version 9 and the world of extensions instead of modules. I will make the transition to the new style of DNN but I am very rusty and out of date on what to use.

I am used to working with modules and groups of modules. I have found a few Advanced Business Directories, but what I have found looks out of date.

I will likely have additional requirements but I thought this was a good starting point.

Thanks in advance,

Cathy

Cathy,

Welcome back to DNN!  Much has changed, but you'll find all the fundamentals are still intact.  For something like this, it is not trivial by any means, but we would probably use a structured content solution (e.g., 2sxc) to build this out.

Cathy,

Welcome back to DNN!  Much has changed, but you'll find all the fundamentals are still intact.  For something like this, it is not trivial by any means, but we would probably use a structured content solution (e.g., 2sxc) to build this out.

I agree with David.  This sounds like a good candidate to first be built using a structured content solution.  This is a faster and lighter-weight way to build something that maybe could be a module - either now, or later.  Honestly, this sounds like something that will definitely end up being a module at some point.  You may want to begin thinking about that now.  This way, you get exactly what you need.

David mentioned 2sxc as a structured content solution.  Another one that we prefer is OpenContent.  It's very similar, but I find it to be lighter-weight, has a lower learning curve, easier to maintain over the years, integrates into a theme better, and it's a great platform for fast & easy psuedo-module development.

Side Note:  You can see listings (directories) of various kinds on different pages on this site, using one or the other of the solutions mentioned above.

As for other off-of-the-shelf solutions, you may want to look at one of the following:

So far, we've been speaking to this in a very direct manner, though.  There could be an even more creative solution.  If you need to create a collection of content and have it display the content in ways that are discoverable, this also sounds a lot like a catalog that an e-commerce module might have, such as Hotcakes Commerce.  You may find that your requirements align well with an e-commerce solution like that or a blog/article module, even.

Hi,
You can also use RocketCDS, it's open source and free.
This is the website: RocketCDS > Home (rocket-cds.org) and this is the Github link: RocketCDS by Nevoweb · GitHub

It has a dedicated directory system included, which is optimised and can handle thousands of records, it has categories and properties, SEO and everything you will need. I think this is what you are looking for.

Here is an example of a business directory we created with it: Vitrine du St Affricain : Consommez, achetez, vivez local > Accueil (vivrelocal-vitrinedusaintaffricain-paysderoquefort.fr)
This example is in French, but obviously it can be in any language and even multiple languages.

Let me know if you need more information !
