Messaging module

What is the Messaging module and is it still used?

I have several websites that have been upgraded to DNN 9.8.  Some of these sites were quite old and go back to DNN 7.x and before.  I notice that they contain the Messaging module.  On the Extensions page, the Version shown for the module is 6.0.2 and the Upgrade column shows 6.1.5.  DNN does not allow me to delete the module, as it does not show the trash can icon.  The In Use column says "No".  Some of my websites show the version as 6.0.2 and some show it as 6.1.5.

I have some websites that were created using DNN 9.x.  These websites do not containg the Messaging module.

So, what is the Messaging module?  Do I need it, and if not, how do I get rid of it?

Thanks,

Gary Steiner

Congrats on posting!
The message center is the module where you can read messages that other users of the website have sent to you.
I would leave it as is. The module is automatically upgraded when upgrading DNN.

If it is automatically upgraded, then why is it telling me that I have version 6.0.2 and that the latest version is 6.1.5?  This is on a website that has been upgraded to DNN 9.8.

If I look at another website that has been created from scratch at version 9.8, it doesn't list the Messaging module in the Extensions page.

Good question. As I don't know of any other extension related to messaging.
But let's rule custom things out, if possible. If you go in the persona bar - settings - extensions, can you click on the pencil icon next to the extension? There should be more info about folder name, creator etc.

Curious to read what you find there :-)

I'm not sure what you mean by "folder name" or "creator".  When I click on the pencil I don't specifically see those terms.

Clicking on the pencil opens up a window with several tabs, the first of which is "Package Information".  It shows Name: Admin.Messaging, Friendly Name: Messaging, Icon: ~/DesktopModules/Admin/Messaging/Images/messaging.gif

Owner: DNN, Organization: DNN Corp., URL: http://www.dnnsoftware.com, and Email address: [email protected].

The next tab says "Extension Settings" which contains various fields, among which are Module Name: DotNetNuke.Messaging and Folder Name: Admin/Messaging .  Is this what you were looking for?

Michael Tobisch it seems you are on to something.  It looks like when then changed to the Messaging Center, they did not uninstall the old module.  That should have been built into the upgrade.  No we are stuck with the old module forcing us to manually manipulate the database to remove it.
