I'm regurlarly trying to to search the language settings to make customisations.

e.g. such as to change what text is displayed in the email when users register.

It takes me forever to find this stuff because there are so many files to look through!

I'm sure i've had a spreadsheet in the past which displayed every piece of text and i could search that file and it told me which file i needed to edit.

Does anybody know how i can obtain such a master spreadsheet please?

There is no such tool out of the box in DNN. I used Zeta Resource Editor in the past to accomplish this, but I am not sure if this is still available/maintained.

To be honest, the language editor's useability could be better in my opinion. When I am searching for a specific string, I am using Notepad++ at the moment (Search >> Find in Files...)

      Happy DNNing!

        thanks Michael,

I use Notepadd ++ too for searching for content on the webfiles, but it is when the content is located inside the Language Editor that I cannot find anything as there are so many resource files and i don't know where to look.

If only it was possible to select all of them and run a search.

Well, I search in Notepad++, set a filter to *.resx, and check "In all subfolders". It is quite easy to find the resource then in the language editor, and by pressing Ctrl+F and entering the key, you find the resource.

Example: Search for "Add module", you find this in the file

             [WebRoot]/admin/ControlPanel/App_LocalResources/AddModule.ascx.resx

The path and filename lead you to the resource. When you double click the search result in Notepad++, you see the following:

            [data name="AddModule.Text" xml:space="preserve"]
              [value]Add Module[/value]
            [/data]

(I used square brackets instead of angle brackets, because it seems not to be possible in the editor)

That gives you the key to search for in the language editor (the value of the "name" attribute in the "data" tag).

This is not the comfortable way for creating a language pack, but it is all I can offer...

          Happy DNNing!

            Thanks.

I can find most of what i need now, but i didn't realise it was possible search through the resource files in notepad!

I thought it couldn't do this because in one of my searches I searched for "A file has been uploaded" (which is what is sent via email) and it didn't return anything (from the root folder using *.* as the filter. And there was nothing to edit in the repository settings.

However, this is only a minor thing now. I can live with this, as the email message is only for admin users and not for public viewing.

Are you finding this to still be an issue in DNN 9.xx?  In more recent releases I've found the built-in find/search feature to be easy to use and I've quickly found everything I've needed so far without using external means.  :)

DNN language search inside resource files works for the current open file only. And static content is (as it should) not indexed by DNN site search
