"Sync This Folder & Subfolders" Not Completing

I cleaned up a bunch of spam users by deleting them and purging them.  I was left with a huge number of "user" folders with several GB of profile pics.  I cleaned all of that up manually, and am trying to run "Sync This Folder & Subfolders."  I run it and it times out, but I figured it might still be running in the background.  I can see w3wp.exe using CPU resources.  After 24 hours, nothing has moved in the portal -- I still see the same old folders not present in the actual file system.  How do I get the file system back in sync?

This might simply be an instance where there was so much data to sync, that you may need to just do it over and over again before it finally finishes.

Thanks.  I disabled the IIS app pool automatic reset and it's been going now for about 30 hours.  I see progress, but it's very slow.  I'll keep waiting it out and maybe ping the community again if it gets stuck.  I think it stopped the other day due to the afforementioned app pool reset.

With there being this many files to sync, there may be a need after this to use a cloud folder provider or the built-in Azure Storage Connector to make this kind of scenario easier to maintain in the future. Such a thing won't help you today though. This is mostly because moving to one of those two other use cases will involve changing links everywhere too.
