I wanted to try out the shiney new upgrade process. I did it on a less-traveled site to not disrupt things too much. I got as far as the screenshot below. It's probably be sitting on this page for a good 10 - 15 minutes now :-/

Also, in situations like this, can the old upgrade process still be used?
I've never used this method. I also use the old mehtod of unzipping th eupgrade package. To be honest I never even saw you gould kickoff the upgrade form here. :-) I never thought about looking, we use an automated backup and upgrade process. My first thought on this is you have some kind of lock that is blocking. Doing the manual unzip might solve your problem.
Yes, until they stop publishing the releases with the Upgrade package zip, the old method still works. I think it would be helpful to try that and let us know if that bypasses this problem.
Also, after seeing the error. My first thought is to recheck your NTFS permissions to make sure your app pool identity has enough permissions to created and delete folders. Its just a guess though.
