Game Show: Dot Net Nuke Pyramid
Welcome, everyone, to the December 15, 2020 session of the Southern Fried DNN User Group. We kick off each year with a fun holiday party. In the past, when we gathered in person in the Charlotte area, we used to visit David's office or head downtown. We'd spend the evening enjoying food and a few pints, which was always a great way to wrap up the year.
However, in the last couple of years, due to quarantine measures and the online format, we've adapted this tradition to the virtual realm. Tonight, we're continuing this tradition, and we'll be playing another DNN-themed game show. If you're interested, you can find links to some of our past games on our YouTube channel, the DNN Community website, or our Southern Fried site. In previous years, we've had fun playing DNN Jeopardy, which we did twice during the Christmas season at Southern Fried. We've also hosted it online at DNNSummit.
While DNN Jeopardy has been a blast, I thought it was time to switch things up a bit. So tonight, we'll be playing the DotNetNuke Pyramid, also known as the Ten Thousand Dollar Pyramid, with a DNN twist.
DNN Game Show Introduction & Rules
Live tonight from the SoFri home of DNN-themed games, we present the DNN $100,000 Pyramid. Our contestants for tonight are Alessandra Davies, Clint Patterson, Dustin Moore, and Jeremy Ferrance.
This iconic game show was famously hosted by Dick Clark and has a rich history. It originally started as the $10,000 Pyramid in the early '70s, later evolving into the $20,000 Pyramid and the $25,000 Pyramid. Its latest incarnation offers a whopping $100,000 prize. Over the years, there have been a few other hosts, but Dick Clark remains synonymous with the game.
Dick Clark offered some valuable tips to contestants as they embarked on their journey. He advised them to stay loose and relaxed while giving and receiving clues. Sometimes, simply saying out loud whatever comes to mind can lead to the correct answer. However, contestants had to be cautious not to use blocked or offending words, which would result in a negative buzzer sound and a missed point.
For those listening to clues, the key was to envision what was being described and identify commonalities between the words. Contestants giving clues were forbidden from using any words from the topic itself. For instance, if the topic was "sun protection items," they could say "umbrella" or "hat," but "sunscreen" was off-limits due to its connection to the word "sun."
It was essential to remember that this wasn't charades, so gestures and hints like "sounds like" or "first word" were not allowed. Instead, contestants were encouraged to keep talking, think of synonyms, use parts of sentences, or create blanks in their sentences if needed. If they got stuck on a word, they could always pass and return to it later. The strategy was to swiftly tackle the known words and pass on the challenging ones.
The game consisted of teams selecting a category and attempting to guess as many words or topics within that category as possible in 30 or 60 seconds. Each team decided who would give the clues and who would receive them, and they alternated roles. The ultimate goal was to reach the Winner's Circle and have a shot at winning the grand prize at the top of the pyramid.
