I guess I could boil this down to a single question.. what are the normal permissions allowed a DNN app in normal ops? Here's my experience of late:

This may not be a problem in DNN. The update from 9.2.2 to 9.3.2 halted several times with various files preventing writing or deleting because of permissions.I investigated another instance of DNN on the server and noted that it had IIS_IUSR roles with full rights. The instance I was upgrading didn't have that role at all, for some odd reason. I added IIS_IUSR and elevated its permissions and the update ran to completion. But... have I opened the site up to vulnerabilities? Any advice on this?

IIS_IUSR is the "old" way of setting IIS NTFS rights.
Nowadays you are supposed to use the AppPoolUser for this...
