New Around Here

    Hi All,

This is my first attempt at setting up a DNN instance. My setup is a Windows 10 VM with IIS etc. installed. Everything is working fine if I access the instance via dnndev.me but if I try to access the instance any other way (e.g. 127.0.0.1, localhost) or (more importantly) from my host that is running the VM via IP address (I have check to ensure the host & guest VM can communcate) I receive a 404 error.

Strangely I can access (e.g.) http://127.0.0.1/robots.txt or http:///robots.txt and it shows me the correct files. Does anyone know how to fix this? I would ideally like to access the DNN instance from my host (not the VM). I'm fairly new to IIS so it could be me doing something silly. I have looked around at all available resources but still can't seem to solve the issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Since xxx.dnndev.me always resolves to 127.0.0.1 (localhost), accessing the website from another machine isn't going to work.

What you need to do, on your 'host' machine is edit the C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts file and create an entry that sets up an entry that resolves a name for the site to the IP address of the VM running DNN. Over on the VM, you'll need to create an IIS binding from the external name to the DNN site. Finally, inside of DNN, you need to create a portal alias for the external name.

If you want to use other names for the portals on your VM, you still need IIS bindings and portal aliases. You already have a binding and a portal alias for dnndev.me. You can also set up bindings and portal aliases for subdomains of dnndev.me, e.g. mysite.dnndev.me.

(Doing this from memory, but it should be close.)
