How to open Project which is developed using DNN?

    Hello 

    I am new to a project where it is already developed and is being used in production . Now i have to open the code and check the application . But got to know the application uses DNN . 

    I dont know anything about DNN and trying to learn . But Before that i want to open the project . 

    Do i have to install or setup anything before related to DNN to open the Visual Studio Project ? Every time i try to open the Visual Studio project , it fails . Dont know exact reason , but know that the project uses DNN and need help in opening the same .. 

    Let me know what prequisites need to be setup or installed.

      Avinash,

      First welcome to the DNN Community.

      The problem is: We don't have any idea about the project, if it is a WAP or a WSP or maybe an MVC project. Therefore we can't tell too much at the moment.

      The best source to underrstand DNN is propably DnnDocs. Just explore how to set up DNN in a development environment and to create modules, I think then you understand how it it works and are able to go on with your (inherited) existing project.

      There are also other tutorials on the web, and video tutorials on YouTube. Google will help you finding it.

        Maybe no need to tell, but just to be sure: the application on the live project won't run in Visual Studio. Ideally, you leave DNN as is and the only dev work is custom modules, connectors etc.
        The code for this custom work is not on the website either as it has been built/packaged.

        @Michael, correct me if I am wrong btw :-)

        If you have inherited a website, the first things you need to know:
        - Version: how far did you fall behind, are you secure or not?
        - What is third party (open source or purchased)
        - What is custom?

        Recently I was also the lucky one to inherite a website. The install was 'only' 4 years old. But some modules 8 years old. That means work.

          Tycho,

          you are right. Ideally, the project is on a dev server (and there in a folder called ~/DesktopModules/MyCompany/MyProject1 etc.), and on the production installation the module is installed using an installation package. Therefore you won't find a solution and/or project file on the production server.

          @Avinash: Do you have any chance to contact your predecessor and ask him for a proper handing over of the project(s)? That would be the simplest solution I guess...
