Having a backup connection string.

New Around Here

We had an unexpected power down last week and the company failed over to our backup servers and DBs.

The db's connection string was to the proimary DB and could not connect to our backup DB server and I was unable to log in and change the connection string and had to wait for access to the actual server and change it, this took quite some time (company policy hey).

Any way my question is there a way to have my DNN site inteligently try to access another db (backup connection string perhaps) if it is unable to connect to the main one that I have stipulated ?

AFAIK no, because any redirected access would include writing to the database and it would be quite complex to consolitate the databases afterwards. The only alternative would be a SQL Server cluster.

Beside Sebastian's suggestion of an SQL Server Cluster there are other possibilities as well, but it is always done in SQL Server and not in DNN.

One way to achieve this is Log Shipping, the other one is Always On availability groups. All of these have their pros and cons.

        Happy DNNing!

I have to echo the advice from Sebastian and Michael. Doing this is not really a DNN thing, but something you'd need to do in your infrastructure somewhere.

For example, using the disaster recovery (DR) and any data loss prevention (DLP) features your website hosting provider/environment might have for you. For example, Azure has features that can do this for you automatically. This isn't an ad for Azure. It's only an example. ;)
