We manage a number of sites for various clients. I am looking for tools to make managing the set of sites easier, starting with an overview of site properties in one place, e.g. have one place to see:

  • What modules are installed on a site?
  • What versions of those modules?
  • What is the size of the various log tables
  • What are error statistics per site?
  • How many users are created on every site?
  • What is the SQL version of the database of the site?
  • When did users log in last?
  • Are there any unauthenticated users?
  • Are there pages and modules in the recycle bin?
  • What are the SEO settings of the various pages in the sites?
  • etc...

All this info, without going to each site to collect the data...

We made a start some time ago to develop a scheduled task (installed on each site that we want to monitor) that uses a web service on a central DNN management site to gather some of this info, but it is far from complete and a.t.m. not flexible enough, ie. not easy to extend.

Any suggestions?

If you need all that data from various sites, my first reaction would be to have access. And AFAIK there are 2 solutions that are capable of this:
https://github.com/cantarus/PolyDeploy
and
http://www.dnnadmin.com/

Now, I don't think that either of these will meet your demands. But ActionGrid will be able to pull all this data and as PolyDeploy is open source, I can imagine you can see what can be done.

PolyDeploy is for roll-out, I just want to gather info, where the application sites are responsible for sending the info the central admin site

I tried DNNAdmin a year ago back or so and I was not very happy with it.

We have an exe that allows you to execute sql against all installations on a server, but it's very much an internal tool far from ready for release in the wild TBH

Years ago, I was working on a dashboard type service to extract this data, but I got distracted with other things. There have been various efforts to improve some of this, but I don't believe that any true solution exists yet.

It sounds like we all have a similar answer...  I also have a tool we've been working on internally but it's not something that could be put into the wild.  It's helped out a lot with estimates, troubleshooting, and support.
