ScriptManager error after upgrade

I'm following the guide for stepping our old server from version 4.7 up to 7.4.2 (https://www.dnnsoftware.c...gested-upgrade-path) and after the first jump (test environment) from 4.7 to 4.9.5 I'm running into some errors.

What I've done so far (in case it is related to what I'm getting now):

1 - When I first loaded the page after the upgrade, I got the error described here:  https://www.dnnsoftware.c...3/scope/posts.  To fix it, I renamed the App_Browsers folder to .old and the upgrade completed successfully.

2 - After the upgrade, pages that offered files for download were coming up with "the type initializer for extentplaceholdercreator threw an exception".  I found this which I added to the web.config and it has resolved this error: https://www.geekandi.com/...oft-sql-server-2012/

    Where I'm stuck now:

The next thing I've run into has got me stuck.  Some pages are bringing up (the ID varies): The control with ID 'customerSearchCpe' requires a ScriptManager on the page. The ScriptManager must appear before any controls that need it.

I found this: https://www.dnnsoftware.c...hat-need-it but after reading it and the additional articles linked there, I am not clear where I need to be looking to make sure the ScriptManager info is in the right place.

I will apologize in advance (and if this is a simple question), I've taken over this code from an old employee and the only DNN knowledge is what I've picked up as I try to figure out how to get this upgraded.

If anyone has any suggestions, they would be very much appreciated.

    Thanks in advance,

    Nancy

      Hi Nancy,

Thnx for joining us. First of all...4.7??? wow... I don't think we even had wifi back in those days.
I'll shake some trees to see if I can find someone who might be of assistance.

Nancy, based on the URL it looks like you have some custom code that is doing regular updates. Does this at all sound familiar?

During this upgrade process there are some breaking behavior changes with asp.net Ajax and script managers

However, within DNN you cannot love the script manager at all in regards to placement, so I would try to find the offending code and see if it can be updated.

Sorry for the mess up in my original post, it pulled in some web address when I pasted the error.  That's all fixed up.

Mitchel - You are correct, there are some custom modules as part of the website but I don't believe we have anything set to update.  The custom pieces were built in house by someone who left a few years ago.  For whatever reason, nothing was documented either inside or separate from the code. so they took all of the knowledge with them and there is no one here now with any experience (and no IT budget to get an outside expert).

They did thankfully setup a test environment so I can work through each step and keep track of what will need to be done when I get to the production side of things.

The server is only for internal use and only for historical data so it isn't used much but I need to upgrade other infrastructure that it uses (OS, SQL Server, .NET) so I need to get it onto a compatible version.

Tycho - It is ancient isn't it?  I didn't realize how old until I started on this project and couldn't find much documentation, it's not often you find stuff so old the Internet has forgotten about it.
