Upgraded Site Migration

New Around Here

We have a custom application built on DNN 7.3.4 that we have upgraded to 9.6.1 on our dev environment, the update includes updates to modules such as DNN Sharp(Forms, Grids, MyTokens, etc), a new custom theme and a number of CSS changes. We have a large number of custom tables with a large data set.

I'm looking for advice on the best way to move this to prod, we obviously have prod data that we can't overwrite. To use the standard upgrade process,  install the modules and updates would mean that prod is down for a signifigant amount of time.

We used redgate to identify the DB changes to go from 7.3.4 to 9.6.1 but scripting all these changes poses a signifigant challenge. We have also looked at using the upgrade scripts to build a single script to make the DB changes but I'm not certain this is possible.

Would love to hear from the community the best practice for moving all these changes to prod.

I'm assuming that your site has enough user contributed content or some other feature that puts you in this position where upgrading and then installing the upgrade is not practical for you.

And, as the current site at 7.3.4 takes a bit of work to upgrade.

Unfortunately, I think this means that upgrading in a dev environment is the safest way to go.

So, pick a time when the site is least busy, advertise the upgrade to your users in advance, shut the site down temporarily, do the upgrade in dev, and then move the upgraded site to live. I don't know of a better way to handle this that is not likely to cause site problems.
